The Useful Site is built to be usable by as many people as reasonably possible, whatever device or method they use to browse it.
What I am working towards
The site is being reviewed with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in mind. The practical aim is that pages are perceivable, operable, understandable and compatible with common assistive technologies.
The Useful Site is not a public-sector website, so the specific public-sector accessibility regulations do not apply to it in the same way. Accessibility is still treated as a basic part of a useful service rather than an optional extra.
Measures currently used
- responsive layouts that adapt to phones, tablets and desktop screens;
- visible labels for calculator fields;
- keyboard-accessible links, controls and form elements;
- semantic headings and page landmarks;
- text alternatives for meaningful images;
- colour choices intended to maintain readable contrast;
- results presented as text rather than colour alone;
- plain language where technical wording is not required.
Zoom and text size
Pages reflow when the browser is zoomed and stay usable at increased text sizes. Some of the older calculators handle this less gracefully than the newer ones. If you find one that becomes difficult to use, please tell me which it was — that is a fault, and I would rather hear about it than leave it there.
Keyboard use
Links, form controls and buttons can be reached using the keyboard. No calculator requires a mouse-specific action such as hovering or dragging merely to obtain the result.
Known limitations
The site contains a large number of independently built calculators. Some older pages may have inconsistent heading structure, compact layouts or result regions that could communicate changes more clearly to screen readers.
These are being improved subject by subject as each one is reviewed. This statement does not claim that every page already meets every WCAG success criterion.
