A reliable home network is easier to build when fixed devices, access points and internet equipment are planned together. Televisions, desktop PCs, consoles, cameras and access points usually benefit from Ethernet, leaving Wi-Fi capacity for genuinely mobile devices.

Use wired Ethernet for TVs, games consoles, desktop PCs, NAS boxes and cameras wherever practical. Keep Wi-Fi for phones, tablets, laptops and smart home devices.

Start with the places where equipment will be used, not where the incoming broadband cable happens to enter the property. New cabling is much cheaper and neater before walls and floors are finished.

Use measured values where possible and leave headroom for busy periods, overhead and future growth.

How the result is worked out

The planner combines room count, wired devices, wireless demand and expected growth. It suggests port capacity and access-point coverage, but final choices still depend on building construction, cable routes, PoE requirements and the broadband service.

Worked example

A three-bedroom home with two televisions, two workspaces, four cameras and two access points can easily need more than eight switch ports once the router uplink, NAS and spare capacity are included. A 16-port PoE switch may be more practical than filling an eight-port switch on day one.

Practical tips

Cable while the floor is up

The most useful thing anyone can do for a home network costs very little during building work and a great deal afterwards. If floors are up, walls are open or a room is being renovated, run cable — even to places that seem unlikely to need it.

Ethernet is cheap and installation labour is not. The cost difference between running one cable and running three to the same place is negligible when the route is already open, and a spare pair of outlets behind a television or in a study is worth having. Cat 6 is the sensible default for new work: it costs marginally more than Cat 5e, supports 10 gigabit over shorter runs, and removes any question of the cabling being the limitation.

Places worth cabling even if there is no immediate need: behind every television, the study or wherever anyone works, the loft and any location where an access point might go, an external wall facing a garden office or garage, and the cupboard where the broadband arrives. A cable to a ceiling access point position is particularly worthwhile, because ceiling-mounted access points cover far better than ones sitting on furniture.

Wired versus wireless, honestly

Wireless is convenient and has become genuinely good. Wired is faster, has lower and more consistent latency, does not degrade when the neighbours install something, and never competes for airtime. Anything that does not move — televisions, consoles, desktops, network storage, printers, access points — benefits from a cable and takes load off the wireless for the things that do move.

What to spend money on, in order

  1. Router position and cabling. Free to cheap, and the largest effect. Nothing else compensates for a router in the wrong place.
  2. A second access point, wired, if any part of the house is poor. More useful than replacing the router with a better one.
  3. A router with decent queue management if calls break up when someone else is downloading. This is bufferbloat and it is a configuration and firmware problem, not a bandwidth one.
  4. A basic unmanaged switch wherever several wired devices cluster. Inexpensive and effectively maintenance-free.
  5. Network storage if there is data worth keeping, with a backup that leaves the building.
  6. Faster broadband, last, and only after establishing that the line rather than the house is the constraint.

The order matters because the common instinct — upgrade the broadband package — is usually the least effective item on the list. A faster line does nothing for a house where the wireless is the narrow point, which describes most complaints about home internet.

Segmenting a home network, and whether it is worth it

Separating a network into segments used to be an enterprise concern. Two changes have made it relevant at home: the number of internet-connected devices in an average house, and how poorly many of them are maintained.

A smart plug, a camera, a television or a robot vacuum runs software the manufacturer may have stopped updating. On a flat network, anything compromised sits alongside your computers, phones and network storage. Segmenting puts those devices where they can reach the internet and nothing else.

Two things are worth doing regardless of segmentation, because they address the most common real risks: change default passwords on everything, and turn off UPnP unless something specifically needs it, since it allows devices to open ports through the firewall without asking.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Ethernet if Wi-Fi is fast?

Ethernet remains useful for fixed, high-traffic or latency-sensitive devices and for reliable access-point backhaul.

What size switch should I buy?

Count every wired endpoint, uplink and PoE device, then add sensible spare capacity. Moving from 8 to 16 ports can be cheaper than replacing a full switch later.

Do access points need PoE?

Many ceiling or wall access points support Power over Ethernet, which carries data and power on one cable. Check the required PoE standard and switch budget.

Should the router and Wi-Fi access point be the same device?

They can be, but separating routing from access points often gives more freedom over placement and future upgrades.

Is Cat 6 necessary at home?

Cat 5e supports gigabit Ethernet when correctly installed. Cat 6 can provide extra margin and may support higher rates over suitable distances, but workmanship and testing matter.

Is Cat 6 worth it over Cat 5e?

For new installation, yes — the price difference is small and the labour is identical, and it removes any doubt about the cabling limiting a future upgrade. For cable already in the walls and working, no: Cat 5e handles gigabit perfectly well over normal domestic distances, and replacing working cable to gain capacity you are not using is not a good trade.

How many devices can a home network handle?

More than most people have, on the wired side — the practical limit is switch ports. Wireless is the real constraint, and it is about airtime rather than a device count: thirty devices mostly idle are easy, while ten devices all streaming are not. Modern equipment handles many devices considerably better than older equipment, largely through smarter scheduling of airtime.

Do I need a separate network for smart home devices?

It is worth doing and increasingly easy. Many smart devices run software that stops receiving updates, and on a flat network anything compromised sits alongside your computers and files. A guest network is the simplest way to separate them and most routers already have one. Full VLAN segmentation is better and considerably more work.

Should I use my ISP's router or buy my own?

Supplied routers have improved and are adequate for many households. Buying your own is worth it if you need better queue management to stop calls breaking up, want features the supplied unit lacks such as VLANs or a proper guest network, or need to place the router somewhere the supplied one cannot go. Check first whether your provider requires their equipment for the connection to work at all, as some do for voice services.
