This calculator compares two pack sizes on price per item, showing the saving per item in both pounds and percentage terms.
It exists because bulk is not reliably cheaper. Multi-buy offers and large packs frequently carry a higher unit price than the standard size, and the only way to know is to divide.

Before you compare
- Compare the same product, not a similar one. Different formulations and concentrations are not interchangeable at the unit level.
- Use the price you will actually pay, including any loyalty-card discount that applies to only one of the options.
- Think about whether you will use it before it expires. A saving on food you throw away is a loss.
- Consider storage. Bulk that ends up in an inaccessible cupboard tends to get bought again.
Consumer research repeatedly finds larger packs priced above the unit rate of smaller ones, particularly where a multi-buy promotion applies to the small size. UK retailers are required to display unit pricing precisely so this can be checked — but the display is small and easy to miss.
How this calculator works
Two divisions and a comparison:
Small pack unit price = small pack price ÷ small pack quantity
Bulk pack unit price = bulk pack price ÷ bulk pack quantity
Saving per item = small unit price − bulk unit priceThe percentage is expressed against the small pack price, so a 16.7% saving means the bulk option costs 16.7% less per item than the smaller pack. A negative result means the bulk pack is the more expensive option per item, which happens more often than most shoppers expect.
Worked example: 6 for £3 against 24 for £10
Using the default figures — a small pack of 6 at £3, against a bulk pack of 24 at £10:
- Small pack: £3 ÷ 6 = £0.50 each
- Bulk pack: £10 ÷ 24 = £0.42 each
- Saving: £0.08 per item, or 16.7%
The saving on the whole bulk pack is £2 against buying four small packs. Worth having — provided you will use all 24. If four of them expire unused, you have paid £10 for 20 items, which is exactly the same 50p each as the small pack, and you have tied up more money to get there.
Common mistakes
- Assuming bulk is cheaper without checking. It frequently is not.
- Ignoring waste. A saving on food that spoils is a loss, not a saving.
- Comparing different products. Concentrated and standard versions are not the same unit.
- Forgetting the cash flow. A larger outlay now can matter more than a small per-unit saving.
- Overlooking loyalty pricing. The comparison changes if the offer applies to only one size.
Frequently asked questions
Is the shelf unit price reliable?
Usually, and it is legally required in the UK, but it is worth checking the units. Retailers have been criticised for inconsistent unit measures across similar products — one priced per 100g and its neighbour per kilogram — which makes visual comparison harder than it should be. Where the units differ, doing the division yourself is safer.
Does this work for multi-buy offers?
Yes. Enter the multi-buy total as the bulk price and the total quantity it covers. A '3 for 2' on a six-pack is 18 items for the price of 12, so enter 18 as the quantity and the price of two packs.
When is bulk buying a bad idea?
When the product perishes before you use it, when storage is genuinely limited, when the outlay strains the week's budget, or when having more of something increases how much you use. That last one is well documented for snacks and household consumables, and it quietly cancels the saving.
Should I bulk buy to beat inflation?
For non-perishables with a long shelf life and a genuine unit saving, it can work. But money spent early is money unavailable for other things, and predicted price rises do not always arrive. Treat it as a modest optimisation rather than a strategy.
