What this calculator works out

This calculator divides the total cost of owning something by the number of times you expect to use it, giving a cost per use.

It is the most useful single reframing in personal spending, because price and value are not the same thing. A £200 coat worn 200 times costs a pound a wear; a £40 one worn twice costs £20 a wear. The cheaper item is the more expensive one.

The honest usage estimate is the hard part

Cost per use is trivial arithmetic dominated by one guess. The reliable way to make that guess is to look at comparable items you already own: how often did you really use the last piece of exercise equipment, the last specialist tool, the last expensive coat?

How this calculator works

One division:

Cost per use = (purchase price + extra ownership costs) ÷ expected number of uses

The calculator treats a minimum of one use, so it never divides by zero.

It does not discount future costs or account for the item's resale value. For an expensive item you expect to sell on, subtract the likely resale figure from the purchase price before entering it — that is the cost you will actually bear.

Worked example: a £120 item

Using the default figures — £120 purchase price, £20 of extra ownership costs, and 50 expected uses:

Whether £2.80 is good value depends entirely on what the alternative costs. If hiring the same item costs £15 a time, buying pays for itself after ten uses. If you would only use it five times, the cost per use is £28 and hiring is obviously better. The number is meaningless alone and decisive in comparison — which is why it is worth running against the alternative rather than in isolation.

Does this work for clothes?

Very well, and it is where the reframing changes behaviour most. A coat worn three times a week for four winters is around 240 wears; at £200 that is 83p a wear. A £40 occasion outfit worn twice is £20 a wear. The Clothing Cost Per Wear Calculator handles the seasonal pattern more precisely.

Should I include the cost of my time?

Not in this calculation, which is about money. If time matters to the decision — assembly, maintenance, travel to collect — the Time Value Calculator gives you an hourly figure you can add separately rather than mixing two different units.

What about buying second-hand?

It usually improves cost per use twice over: the purchase price is lower and the depreciation you will bear is smaller, since most of it has already happened. For items where condition is easy to assess, it is often the best value available.

How do I handle something I will use heavily then never again?

Compare against hiring, borrowing or a library of things. A tool needed for one project may be far cheaper to hire even at what looks like an expensive daily rate. Many UK areas now have tool libraries or share schemes worth checking first.
