What this calculator works out
This calculator multiplies a stitch count by the thread each stitch consumes, adds an allowance, and returns the total thread length in metres.
The thread-per-stitch figure depends on the fabric count, the number of strands and the stitch type, so it is an input rather than a constant.

- Around 1.2 cm per cross stitch is a reasonable figure for two strands on 14 count fabric. Coarser fabric and more strands both increase it.
- Count stitches per colour, not in total. Thread is bought by colour, so a total is only useful for the overall quantity.
- The allowance covers starting and finishing each length, waste at the needle end, and mistakes. 15% is a minimum.
- A standard skein of stranded cotton is about 8 m of six-stranded thread, which is roughly 48 m of single strand.
An 8 metre skein contains six strands twisted together. Stitching with two strands means each metre of skein yields three metres of working thread, so an 8 m skein provides around 24 m of two-strand stitching. Working from the skein length without accounting for the strands overestimates the number of skeins needed by three times.
How this calculator works
Stitches times thread per stitch, plus an allowance:
Metres = stitch count × thread per stitch in cm ÷ 100 × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)Dividing by 100 converts centimetres to metres. To convert the result into skeins, divide by the working length a skein provides at your strand count — roughly 24 m for two strands from an 8 m skein.
Worked example: 5,000 stitches
Using the default figures — 5,000 stitches at 1.2 cm each with a 15% allowance:
- Thread needed: 69 metres
At two strands from an 8 m skein — about 24 m of working thread — that is roughly three skeins if the design were a single colour. Real designs use twenty or thirty colours with wildly uneven stitch counts, so the total is mainly useful as a sanity check; the per-colour counts from the chart are what determine the shopping list.
Common mistakes
- Converting skein length without allowing for strands. An 8 m skein gives about 24 m at two strands.
- Using one figure for all fabric counts. Coarser fabric uses more thread per stitch.
- Working with a long thread. Above about 45 cm it tangles and wears thin.
- Estimating the total rather than per colour. Thread is bought by colour.
- Forgetting the allowance. Starts, finishes and waste are a real proportion.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a working thread be?
Around 45 cm is the usual maximum. Longer threads tangle, and repeated passing through the fabric wears the thread thin and dull towards the end. Shorter threads mean more starts and finishes, which is what the allowance covers.
How many strands should I use?
Two strands on 14 count aida is the standard for full coverage. One strand on 18 count or finer, and for backstitch outlining at any count. Three strands on 11 count. The chart or kit usually specifies, and using more than needed both wastes thread and obscures detail.
How do I estimate thread per colour?
Count the stitches of each colour from the chart — many charting programs give this automatically — and apply the same per-stitch figure. For hand-counted charts, estimating by eye and rounding up generously is usually adequate, since a spare skein costs little and a missing colour stops work.
Can I run out of a colour part-way?
Yes, and dye lots apply to embroidery thread as they do to yarn. A replacement skein of the same shade number can differ visibly, particularly in large blocks of a single colour. Buying an extra skein of any colour used heavily is cheap insurance.
