Plan for simultaneous use, not the total number of activities across a whole day. Add headroom so a short burst, software update or Wi-Fi inefficiency does not make the connection feel immediately congested.

How the result is worked out

The checker adds the estimated bandwidth for the selected activities and applies a headroom percentage. Download and upload needs are considered separately because video calls, cloud backups and content creation can be upstream-heavy.

Worked example

Two 4K streams at 25 Mbit/s each, two HD calls at 4 Mbit/s each and ordinary browsing at 10 Mbit/s create about 68 Mbit/s of download demand. Adding 30% headroom suggests a package around 90 Mbit/s or higher.

Gaming is the activity most often over-provisioned. It uses very little bandwidth; what it needs is low, consistent latency, and no amount of extra speed provides that. A 1,000 Mb/s connection with erratic latency is worse for gaming than a 50 Mb/s connection with steady latency.

Latency, jitter and packet loss — the numbers speed does not cover

Bandwidth is how much can flow. These three describe how well it flows, and for calls and gaming they matter more.

Bufferbloat, and why a fast line can feel slow

A common and under-diagnosed problem: when one device saturates the connection, oversized buffers in the router queue packets rather than dropping them, and latency for everything else climbs from 20 ms to several hundred. The symptom is that calls break up whenever someone uploads or downloads something large. The fix is not more bandwidth — it is a router with modern queue management, often labelled smart queue, SQM or fq_codel. Several free online tests measure latency under load specifically.

Whether upgrading will actually help

Broadband is regularly sold on the assumption that more speed solves everything. Often it solves nothing, because the constraint is elsewhere.

Upload capacity is worth checking separately, and is frequently the real limitation. Home working, video calls and cloud backup all depend on it, and it is where asymmetric connections are weakest.

How much speed does a household need?

There is no single figure. Light browsing may need little, while several simultaneous 4K streams and uploads can justify 100 Mbit/s or more.

Does faster broadband improve Wi-Fi coverage?

No. Coverage depends on access-point placement, building materials, frequency and interference.

Is gaming bandwidth-heavy?

Gameplay often uses modest bandwidth, but low latency and stable packet delivery matter. Game downloads can be very large.

Why do video calls fail when speed tests look good?

The problem may be upload capacity, latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference or congestion at busy times.

Should I buy the fastest package available?

Not automatically. Choose enough capacity for simultaneous demand and headroom, then improve the home network if Wi-Fi remains the limit.

Do I need gigabit broadband?

Most households do not. A family of four with several devices, some 4K streaming and a couple of people working from home is comfortable on 100 to 200 Mb/s. Gigabit is worth having if you regularly move very large files, run servers, have many simultaneous heavy users, or simply want the headroom — but for typical use it will not feel different from a well-configured 100 Mb/s connection, because the bottleneck moves elsewhere.

Why is my Wi-Fi slower than the speed I pay for?

Because the wireless link, not the broadband line, is usually the narrowest point. Wi-Fi loses signal to walls and distance, shares airtime between devices, and competes with neighbouring networks. Test with a computer connected by cable: if that reaches the advertised speed, the line is fine and the work needs doing on coverage inside the house.

What speed do I need for working from home?

Less download than most people assume and more upload. A video call needs roughly 2 to 4 Mb/s in each direction, and the upload side is where asymmetric connections struggle. Steady latency matters more than raw speed — a connection with 40 Mb/s down, 10 Mb/s up and consistent latency will serve better than a much faster one that spikes whenever someone else is using it.

Should I choose the provider offering the highest speed?

Speed is one factor among several, and often not the deciding one. Upload capacity, latency under load, whether the connection is full fibre or runs over copper for the last stretch, contention at peak times, the contract length and price after the introductory period all matter. A well-run 150 Mb/s service can be a better daily experience than a poorly-run gigabit one.
