This planner divides driving time by your maximum stint to give the number of breaks, and multiplies by the break length to give the total time they add.
It answers a narrow question — how much time breaks cost — which is worth knowing precisely because that cost is what tempts people to skip them.

Before you plan stints
- Driving time means time at the wheel, not total journey time. Add the breaks to it rather than fitting them inside it.
- Two hours is the commonly recommended maximum stint, with at least a 15 minute break.
- Rounding is downwards, so a journey just short of a multiple of the stint length gets one fewer break.
- Sharing the driving changes the arithmetic entirely — two drivers alternating can cover far more ground safely.
On a six hour drive, two breaks add 40 minutes — around 11% of the journey. Fatigue costs considerably more than that in reaction time and concentration long before it produces a visible problem, and it is the leading contributor in a substantial share of serious collisions on long journeys.
How this calculator works
Stints counted, then multiplied:
Breaks = driving time ÷ maximum stint, rounded down
Total break time = breaks × break lengthThe small subtraction in the calculation stops an exact multiple producing an unnecessary final break — a four hour drive at two hour stints takes one break in the middle, not two.
Worked example: a six hour drive
Using the default figures — 6 hours of driving, 2 hour maximum stints, 20 minute breaks:
- Breaks needed: 2
- Total break time: 40 minutes
Six hours becomes six hours forty. Lengthening the stints to three hours saves 20 minutes and takes each stint past the recommended maximum — which is a poor trade for a journey already long enough to make fatigue the main risk. Leaving earlier is the better way to arrive earlier.
Common mistakes
- Fitting breaks inside the journey time. They add to it.
- Extending stints to save time. The saving is small and the risk is not.
- Treating a break as only a fuel stop. A break is for the driver, not the car.
- Planning breaks and then skipping them. Stop when tiredness appears, not when the schedule says.
- Ignoring the start of the journey. A long drive after a full working day is the highest-risk pattern of all.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a break be?
At least 15 minutes on a long drive, and long enough to leave the vehicle and move about. A break spent sitting in the car checking a phone does considerably less for alertness than a short walk. Where tiredness is already present, a 15 to 20 minute nap after a caffeinated drink is the recommended response.
Do private drivers have legal limits?
No. Drivers' hours rules apply to most commercial goods and passenger vehicles, not to private cars. The absence of a rule does not change the physiology, and the Highway Code's guidance on breaks applies to everyone. Driving while impaired by tiredness can still lead to prosecution if it causes a collision.
Is sharing the driving better?
Considerably, provided both drivers are insured and both are actually rested. Alternating in two hour stints allows one person to rest properly while the other drives. It does not work if the passenger cannot sleep or if both have been awake since early morning.
When is the riskiest time to drive?
The early hours, roughly 2am to 6am, and to a lesser extent mid-afternoon — both correspond to natural dips in the body clock. Long motorway drives at those times combine low stimulation with low alertness, which is why fatigue-related collisions cluster there.
