What this advisor does

This advisor suggests processor, memory and storage specifications from what you intend to use the laptop for, your budget, and whether portability, battery life, storage or ports matter.

It deliberately gives specifications rather than models. Models change every few months; the specification a task needs changes far more slowly.

Buy memory once

Processor performance has plateaued enough that a three-year-old mid-range chip remains perfectly usable. Memory has not — 8 GB was comfortable a few years ago and is now the thing that makes a machine feel slow with a browser and a couple of applications open. Since it is usually soldered, the amount bought on day one is the amount for the machine's life.

The suggestions are floors rather than targets. Where a specification is close to a boundary, the higher option almost always extends the useful life by more than the price difference suggests.

Worked example: general use on a budget

Selecting general home and office use with a budget price range returns 8 GB minimum with 16 GB preferred, a mid-range current-generation processor, and a 256 GB SSD as a floor.

The gap between 8 and 16 GB is the decision that matters here. It typically costs £50 to £100 at purchase and cannot be changed afterwards on most machines, and it is the difference between a laptop that feels fine for two years and one that feels fine for five. Every other specification on the list can be worked around; that one cannot.

How much memory do I need?

16 GB is the sensible floor for a machine expected to last several years, and 8 GB is workable only for light use. Browsers in particular consume far more than they once did, and memory is the resource that runs out first in everyday use. Since it is rarely upgradeable, buying more at purchase is buying years of usefulness.

Does the processor matter much?

Less than it used to for general use. A current mid-range chip handles browsing, office work and video calls comfortably, and the difference from a high-end one is invisible for those tasks. It matters for video editing, compilation, simulation and gaming, where it matters a great deal.

What about battery life?

Manufacturer figures are measured under light conditions and real use is commonly half to two thirds of the quoted number. Screen brightness is usually the largest consumer. Where all-day use away from power matters, weighting the choice towards efficiency rather than peak performance generally serves better.

Should I buy refurbished?

Frequently good value, particularly for business-class machines that were built to a higher standard than consumer models at the same price. Buy from a seller offering a warranty, check the battery health, and confirm the machine will still receive operating system and security updates for the period you intend to keep it.
