What this calculator works out
This calculator takes the manufacturer's recoat time and adjusts it for room temperature and humidity, returning a realistic waiting period and the factor applied.
Manufacturer times are measured under controlled conditions, typically around 20°C and 50% humidity. A cold damp room in February bears little resemblance to that, which is why paint that should be recoatable in four hours is still tacky the next morning.

Before you rely on the figure
- Take the base recoat time from the tin, not the touch-dry time. They are different numbers and recoating on touch-dry lifts the first coat.
- Measure the actual room temperature, not the outside temperature or the thermostat setting.
- Humidity matters most in bathrooms, kitchens, new builds and rooms with fresh plaster.
- Most emulsions have a minimum application temperature, commonly around 10°C. Below that, do not paint at all.
Drying is mostly about moisture leaving the film. Warming a sealed room raises the air's capacity to hold water but does not remove it. Opening a window, even briefly and repeatedly, moves damp air out and does more than turning the heating up in a closed room.
How this calculator works
A base time with cumulative adjustment factors:

Adjusted time = base recoat time × factorThe adjustments are cumulative, so a cold and damp room can more than double the wait. They are approximations of how solvent and water evaporation slow, not measurements of a specific product.
Below 10°C many paints will not cure properly at all, and the result may never reach full hardness. The calculator will still return a figure; the tin's minimum temperature is the binding instruction.
Worked example: warm room against cold and damp
Using the default figures — a 4 hour recoat time at 20°C and 50% humidity:
- Factor: 1.00 — no adjustment
- Allow about 4 hours
Now set the same paint at 12°C and 75% humidity, which is an ordinary unheated room in a British winter:
- Factor: 1 + 0.35 (below 15°C) + 0.35 (above 70%) = 1.70
- Allow about 6.8 hours
Nearly seven hours rather than four turns a two-coat day into a two-day job. Planning around the room you are actually painting in, rather than the tin's laboratory figure, is the difference between a schedule that works and one that does not.
Common mistakes
- Using the touch-dry time as the recoat time. Touch dry can be under an hour; recoat is much longer.
- Painting below the minimum temperature. The film may never cure properly.
- Heating a sealed room. Ventilation removes moisture; heat alone does not.
- Recoating because it feels dry. The surface dries before the film underneath does.
- Assuming gloss behaves like emulsion. Oil-based paints take considerably longer and are more sensitive to cold.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between touch dry, recoat and fully cured?
Touch dry means the surface is no longer tacky, often within an hour. Recoat time is when the film is stable enough to take another coat without lifting. Full cure — the point at which the paint reaches its final hardness and can be washed or knocked without marking — can take two to four weeks, which is why fresh paintwork marks so easily.
Can I paint in an unheated room in winter?
Only above the minimum application temperature on the tin, usually around 10°C, and expect a substantially longer wait between coats. Cold surfaces are also prone to condensation, which ruins a finish. If the room cannot be brought above about 12°C, waiting for warmer weather usually produces a better result than persevering.
Does a dehumidifier help?
Yes, particularly in bathrooms, basements and rooms with new plaster. Reducing humidity is more effective than raising temperature for water-based paints, because it directly increases the rate at which moisture can leave the film. Combining moderate warmth with ventilation or a dehumidifier is the fastest sensible approach.
Why is my paint still tacky the next day?
Usually cold, high humidity, poor ventilation or a coat applied too thickly — often several of those together. It may also be a compatibility problem, such as water-based paint over an oil-based surface that was not sanded and primed. If it stays tacky for several days, the coat generally has to come off rather than be painted over.
