What this checker works out

This checker estimates weekly screen time from weekday and weekend hours, applies a reduction for breaks you take, and reports the weekly total, a daily average and the hours the breaks save.

There is no official screen time limit for adults, and the total on its own says very little. What matters is what the screen displaces and when it is used.

When matters more than how much

Evening screen use is associated with poorer sleep, through a combination of light exposure, mental stimulation and simply displacing bedtime. An hour before bed is more consequential than an hour in the afternoon, which is why guidance focuses on the period before sleep rather than on a daily total.

How this calculator works

A weekly total with an adjustment:

Raw weekly = (weekday hours × 5) + (weekend hours × 2)
Adjusted weekly = raw × (1 − break reduction ÷ 100)
Daily average = adjusted ÷ 7

The break reduction is a rough correction rather than a measurement. Device-reported screen time counts a screen as active whether or not you are attending to it, which overstates genuine use for most people.

Worked example: 4 hours on weekdays

Using the default figures — 4 hours on weekdays, 6 at weekends, with a 10% break reduction:

Nearly 29 hours a week is more than a full working day. Whether that matters depends entirely on what it replaced — 29 hours of reading, video calls with family and following interests is not the same as 29 hours of scrolling instead of sleeping. The number is a prompt to look at the composition, not a verdict on it.

Is there a recommended limit for adults?

No. UK health bodies have not set an adult screen time limit, in part because the evidence does not support a specific threshold and in part because screens are now integral to work and social life. Guidance focuses instead on sleep, physical activity and what screen use displaces.

Does blue light really affect sleep?

Light exposure in the evening does suppress melatonin and delay sleep timing, and screens contribute to that. However, research on blue-light filters and glasses has produced mixed results, suggesting the mental stimulation of what you are doing and the simple displacement of bedtime matter at least as much as the wavelength.

What about children?

Guidance for children focuses on ensuring screen use does not displace sleep, physical activity, family time or homework, rather than setting a fixed hourly limit. The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health has deliberately declined to specify thresholds, recommending families ask whether screen use is controlled and whether it interferes with what the child should be doing.

How do I reduce evening use?

The changes that work tend to be structural rather than willpower-based: charging devices outside the bedroom, setting a cut-off time, removing the most compulsive apps from the phone, and having a specific alternative for the last hour. Vague intentions to use the phone less rarely survive a tired evening.
