What this calculator works out
This calculator multiplies a screen's diagonal size by a factor for your preferred viewing style, returning a suggested seating distance in metres and feet.
The factors reflect resolution as much as taste. A 4K screen can be viewed much closer than an HD one before individual pixels become visible, which is why the recommended distances have shortened considerably in recent years.

- Screen size is the diagonal in inches, which is how televisions are sold.
- Measure your actual seating distance before choosing a size. The room usually decides the television rather than the other way round.
- Immersive 4K at 1.2× fills more of your field of view; conservative at 2× suits HD content and mixed viewing.
- If you watch a lot of standard-definition or heavily compressed content, sitting closer makes its flaws more obvious, not less.
The industry reference points are expressed as viewing angles rather than distances — around 30 degrees for a comfortable cinematic experience and 40 degrees for full immersion. The multipliers here are a practical shorthand for the same thing, converted into a distance you can measure with a tape.
How this calculator works
Diagonal size times a factor, converted to metres:
Distance = screen size in inches × factor × 0.0254
1.2× immersive 4K · 1.5× general 4K · 2× conservative or HDThe 0.0254 converts inches to metres. The calculation uses the diagonal rather than the width, which is why the factors look small — a 55 inch screen is only about 122 cm wide.
Worked example: a 55 inch screen
Using the default figures — a 55 inch television:
- Immersive 4K at 1.2×: 1.68 m
- General 4K at 1.5×: 2.10 m
- Conservative or HD at 2×: 2.79 m
Turn that around, which is the more useful direction. If your sofa is 3 m from the wall, general 4K viewing suggests a screen of around 79 inches — considerably larger than most people would instinctively buy for that room. The common mistake is buying too small for the distance, not too large.
Common mistakes
- Buying a screen without measuring the room. The distance should drive the size.
- Using HD guidance for a 4K screen. The old advice recommends sitting much further back than necessary.
- Choosing a size to suit the furniture. The media unit is easier to change than the seating distance.
- Ignoring the viewing angle from the ends of a sofa. Off-axis performance varies by panel type.
- Forgetting the room's light. Screen brightness and reflections often matter more than size.
Frequently asked questions
Can a TV be too big?
For a given distance, yes — the screen eventually exceeds a comfortable field of view and you find yourself moving your head to follow the picture. In practice, most people in most UK living rooms are well short of that limit. The more common constraint is that a very large screen dominates the room when switched off.
Does 4K change the recommended distance?
Substantially. The old HD guidance of two to three times the screen size existed because you could see the pixel structure closer than that. At 4K the pixels are four times as dense, so you can sit roughly half as far away before noticing them — which is why 1.2× to 1.5× is now reasonable.
What about 8K?
In theory it allows sitting closer still. In practice there is very little native 8K content, and at normal living room distances most viewers cannot distinguish 8K from 4K on the same size screen. Screen brightness, contrast and panel quality make a far larger visible difference than resolution beyond 4K.
Does it matter what I watch?
Yes. Native 4K streaming and Blu-ray reward sitting closer. Standard-definition broadcast, older content and heavily compressed streams look worse close up, because you see the compression artefacts as clearly as the detail. If most of your viewing is ordinary broadcast television, the conservative figure is more comfortable.
