- Millimetres are the modern standard and the only measurement that describes the hook itself.
- US sizing uses letters with numbers — G/6, H/8 — and the two parts do not always move together between manufacturers.
- UK sizing runs in the opposite direction to US: a higher UK number is a smaller hook.
- Some sizes have no common equivalent in one system or the other, and the converter says so rather than guessing.
Two hooks marked H/8 from different manufacturers can differ measurably in diameter, and the US letter-number pairing is not applied uniformly. This is a real difference from knitting needles, where metric sizing is closely observed. Measuring a hook, or working from millimetres, avoids the problem entirely.

Worked example: 4 mm
Using the default figure — 4 mm:
- Nearest standard: 4.00 mm
- US size: G/6
- UK size: 8
Enter 5.7 mm — a size some manufacturers produce — and it rounds to 5.50 mm with a 0.20 mm difference reported. That fifth of a millimetre is enough to change gauge noticeably, so the honest answer is that there is no exact equivalent rather than that it is an I/9. Reporting the gap is more useful than hiding it.
Common mistakes
- Assuming US and UK numbers run the same way. They are opposite.
- Trusting the letter alone. Manufacturers apply the letter-number pairing inconsistently.
- Using this table for steel thread hooks. They use a separate numbering system.
- Ignoring the rounding. A fifth of a millimetre changes gauge measurably.
- Substituting a hook without swatching. Even the same nominal size can differ.

Why is crochet hook sizing so inconsistent?
Historically, hooks were made to national conventions that developed separately, and unlike knitting needles there has been less pressure towards a single metric standard. Ergonomic and specialist hooks add further sizes outside the traditional table. The result is that the marked letter is a rough guide and the millimetre figure is a specification.
What are steel hooks numbered differently?
Fine steel hooks for thread crochet use their own numbering, running from about 0.6 mm to 3.5 mm, where higher numbers mean smaller hooks — the opposite of the aluminium range. They are not interchangeable with the standard table and should be selected by millimetre size.
Does hook material matter?
For gauge, a little. Aluminium and steel are slippery and produce a slightly looser fabric for many crocheters; wood and bamboo grip more. Ergonomic handles change comfort rather than gauge. As with knitting, swatching with the hook you will use removes the question.
How do I measure an unmarked hook?
A hook gauge or callipers, measuring the shaft rather than the head or the thumb rest. The shaft diameter is what determines stitch size. Markings wear off aluminium hooks readily, which is why gauges are sold for exactly this purpose.
