What this converter does
This converter finds the nearest standard needle size to a metric measurement and gives the UK and US equivalents, along with how far the nearest standard size is from what you entered.
The three systems do not map cleanly onto each other. Several metric sizes have no common UK or US equivalent, and the converter says so rather than inventing one.

Before you convert
- Metric millimetres are the modern standard and the most reliable. UK and US numbering both exist in older and newer forms.
- UK sizes run in the opposite direction to US ones — a higher UK number is a smaller needle, and a higher US number is larger.
- Some sizes exist in one system and not the others. 3.5 mm has a US equivalent and no common UK one.
- Needle gauges — the small punched plates — are cheap and settle any doubt about an unmarked needle.
UK sizing descends from a wire gauge where the number counted drawing operations, so higher numbers meant thinner wire. US sizing was built the other way round, counting upwards with size. Metric simply states the diameter. Only the last of the three describes the needle rather than a manufacturing history, which is why patterns increasingly quote it.

Report its UK and US equivalents, and the difference from what was enteredReporting the difference matters. A 3.9 mm needle converts to 4.00 mm with a 0.1 mm difference, which is negligible. A 3.6 mm entry also converts to 3.50 mm — but a tenth of a millimetre in needle size is enough to move gauge by around half a stitch over 10 cm, so it is worth knowing which way the rounding went.
Worked example: 4 mm
Using the default figure — 4 mm:
- Nearest standard size: 4.00 mm
- UK equivalent: 8
- US equivalent: 6
Note the direction. Going up a size to 4.50 mm takes the UK number down to 7 and the US number up to 7 — the two systems move opposite ways, and 4.50 mm happens to be numbered 7 in both. That coincidence is exactly the kind of thing that causes a pattern to be misread, which is why the metric figure is the one to work from.
Common mistakes
- Assuming UK and US numbers run the same way. They are opposite.
- Using an old UK conversion chart. Older sizing differs from modern equivalents.
- Ignoring the rounding. A tenth of a millimetre affects gauge measurably.
- Trusting an unmarked needle. A needle gauge costs little and removes the guess.
- Assuming every size converts. Some have no equivalent in another system.
Frequently asked questions
Which sizing system should I use?
Metric, wherever the pattern allows. It states the actual diameter and is unambiguous, whereas both UK and US numbering carry historical variations. Most modern patterns give metric with a US or UK equivalent in brackets, and where they disagree the metric figure is the one to trust.
Does needle material affect gauge?
Yes, though less than size. Metal needles are slippery and many knitters work more loosely on them; bamboo and wood grip the yarn and tend to produce a slightly tighter fabric. If you swatch on one material and knit on another, the gauge may not hold — which is worth knowing before blaming the yarn.
What about interchangeable needle sets?
They are usually marked in metric and cover most common sizes, which makes them economical for anyone knitting regularly. Check that the cable joins are smooth, since a rough join snags yarn on every row. Sets frequently omit the smallest sizes, which are needed for socks and fine work.
How do I measure an unmarked needle?
With a needle gauge — a small plate with graduated holes. Slide the needle into holes until you find the smallest it passes through cleanly. Callipers work too. Markings wear off metal needles readily, and gauging them is quicker than guessing from a swatch.
