What this calculator works out
This calculator compares your gauge against the pattern's, shows how much wider or narrower the finished piece will be, and gives the stitch count needed to reach the intended width at your tension.
Gauge is the single most consequential thing in knitting a garment, and the most commonly skipped.

How to read this
If your gauge has more stitches over the same distance, your knitting is tighter and the finished item will usually be smaller. Fewer stitches means looser knitting and a larger result.
Before you measure
- Knit a swatch at least 15 cm square in the pattern stitch, and measure the middle — edges distort.
- Wash and block the swatch as you will the finished item. Some yarns change substantially, and superwash wool can grow considerably.
- Measure over the same distance the pattern uses, commonly 10 cm.
- Count stitches including partial ones. Rounding to a whole stitch across 10 cm introduces several per cent of error.
Two extra stitches over 10 cm sounds trivial. Across a 100 stitch front it is the difference between 50 cm and 45.5 cm — nearly 5 cm on the front alone, and twice that around a garment. Gauge errors multiply with the size of the piece, which is why they matter on a jumper and barely at all on a scarf.

Corrected stitch count = target width × your gauge ÷ measurement distanceMore stitches to 10 cm means a tighter tension and a narrower result, so a higher gauge number produces a smaller piece — which is counter-intuitive until you have been caught by it once.
Row gauge is a separate measurement and is not adjusted here. It matters most for pieces knitted to a row count rather than a length, and for shaping worked over a set number of rows.
Worked example: two stitches out
Using the default figures — pattern gauge 20 stitches to 10 cm, yours 22, over a 100 stitch piece intended to finish 50 cm:
- Pattern width: 50 cm
- Your width: 45.45 cm — 9.1% smaller
- Stitches needed for 50 cm at your gauge: 110
Four and a half centimetres lost on the front, so nine around the body — a garment intended to be 100 cm around would finish at 91. That is a size down, from two stitches of difference. The fix is either a larger needle until the gauge matches, or working from the corrected stitch count and adjusting the shaping to suit.
Common mistakes
- Not swatching. The most common cause of a garment that does not fit.
- Measuring an unwashed swatch. Blocking can change gauge substantially.
- Swatching in stocking stitch for a textured pattern. Gauge is stitch-specific.
- Measuring at the edges. They curl and distort; measure the centre.
- Assuming a higher gauge means a bigger result. More stitches per centimetre means tighter and smaller.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change my gauge?
Needle size is the main lever — a larger needle gives fewer stitches to 10 cm and a bigger result, a smaller needle the reverse. A half millimetre typically changes gauge by about half a stitch over 10 cm. Changing how tightly you hold the yarn is possible but unreliable; changing needles is repeatable.
Should I match stitch gauge or row gauge?
Stitch gauge first, since it governs width and width is what determines fit. Row gauge affects length, which can usually be adjusted by working more or fewer rows. Where shaping is specified over a set number of rows — a sleeve cap, a raglan — row gauge matters more and may need recalculating.
Does blocking really change the measurement?
Considerably, for some yarns. Superwash wool commonly grows on blocking and can keep growing with wear. Cotton and linen relax. Non-superwash wool is more stable. This is why the swatch should be treated exactly as the finished item will be, including washing and drying flat.
What if I cannot match gauge at all?
Work from your own gauge instead. Calculate the stitch count for the width you want, as this tool does, and adjust the pattern's numbers proportionally. It requires more care around shaping and stitch pattern repeats, and it produces a garment that fits — which matching a gauge you cannot achieve will not.
