What this estimator works out

This estimator multiplies the piece count by your seconds per piece, divides by an efficiency factor for the time spent searching rather than placing, and returns hours.

Seconds per piece is not constant across a puzzle. The edge goes quickly, the distinctive areas go quickly, and a large expanse of sky can take longer than everything else combined.

Sorting is the work

Most of a puzzle's time goes on finding the right piece rather than fitting it. Sorting by edge, by colour and by pattern before starting front-loads that work and makes the assembly far faster — which is why experienced puzzlers spend the first hour apparently not building anything.

How this calculator works

Piece time adjusted for searching:

Hours = pieces × seconds per piece ÷ 3,600 ÷ (efficiency ÷ 100)

Dividing by the efficiency increases the time, since an efficiency below 100% means more elapsed time for the same placements. Setting it to 100% gives the theoretical minimum where every second is a placement.

Worked example: a 1,000 piece puzzle

Using the default figures — 1,000 pieces at 12 seconds each with 80% efficiency:

Just over four hours, which for a straightforward 1,000 piece image is realistic. A difficult one — heavy sky, repeating pattern, or a photographic mosaic — can easily double the seconds per piece and halve the efficiency, giving over ten hours. The piece count is the specification; the image is what determines the time.

How long does a 1,000 piece puzzle take?

Commonly three to ten hours depending on the image and the puzzler, spread over several sessions. Simple images with distinct areas go fastest; large expanses of similar colour, repeating patterns and photographic mosaics take longest. A 2,000 piece puzzle typically takes more than twice as long, since the search space grows faster than the piece count.

Does sorting really help?

Substantially. Separating edges first, then grouping by colour and pattern, converts a search through a thousand pieces into a search through fifty. The apparent slowness of the first hour is what makes the remaining hours fast, and it becomes more valuable the larger the puzzle.

What makes a puzzle difficult?

Large areas of uniform colour, repeating patterns, a design that extends beyond the visible image, and pieces cut in similar shapes. Some puzzles are deliberately difficult — those with no straight edges, identical piece shapes, or an image different from the box. Piece count is the least informative measure of difficulty.

How do I keep a large puzzle safe between sessions?

A purpose-made puzzle board or a large sheet of card that can be lifted and stored, or a roll-up mat for very large puzzles. Both let the table be used between sessions, which is often the practical constraint on finishing a large puzzle at all.
