What this estimator works out
This estimator converts a project's stitch or row count into hours at your own working speed, adds a finishing allowance, and translates the total into weeks at your available knitting time.
The weeks figure is the useful one. Hours are abstract; knowing a project is nine weeks at your actual pace is what makes a Christmas deadline realistic or not.
Project size and speed
Before you estimate
- Measure your own speed rather than guessing. Time one full row and divide by the stitch count.
- Speed varies enormously with the stitch. Stocking stitch is fast; cables, colourwork and lace are considerably slower.
- The finishing allowance covers seaming, weaving in ends, blocking and any button bands. 15% is modest for a garment.
- Hours per week should be honest rather than aspirational.
Seaming, weaving in ends, blocking and adding buttons or zips routinely take 10 to 20% of a garment's total time, and colourwork with many ends can take more. It is also the part most likely to be rushed, which is where an otherwise good piece of knitting is spoiled.
How this calculator works
Stitches or rows converted to hours, then to weeks:
By stitches: hours = (rows × stitches per row) ÷ (speed × 60)
By rows: hours = rows ÷ rows per hour
Both then multiplied by (1 + finishing ÷ 100)
Weeks = hours ÷ hours available per weekThe two speed units suit different ways of measuring. Stitches per minute is easier to time on a single row; rows per hour is easier to observe across an evening's knitting and automatically absorbs the pauses.
Worked example: a 180 row project
Using the default figures — 180 rows of 120 stitches, 35 stitches a minute, 15% finishing, 5 hours a week:
- Total stitches: 21,600
- Estimated time: 11.8 hours
- At 5 hours a week: 2.4 weeks
Under three weeks, which for a project of this size is realistic. Scale it to a full jumper at around 60,000 stitches and the same pace gives 33 hours, or nearly seven weeks at five hours a week. Starting a jumper as a Christmas present in early December is the calculation most knitters do implicitly and optimistically.
Common mistakes
- Using a stocking stitch speed for cables or lace. They are considerably slower.
- Omitting finishing. It is a real and substantial share of the total.
- Overstating available hours. Estimate from what you actually knit, not what you intend to.
- Forgetting the ribbing. It is slower per stitch than the body of a piece.
- Ignoring reknitting. Most projects involve unpicking something.
Frequently asked questions
How fast do people knit?
It varies enormously with technique and experience — anywhere from around 20 stitches a minute to well over 100 for very practised knitters using efficient styles. Your own measured figure is the only one worth using, and it will differ between stitch patterns.
Does knitting style affect speed?
Considerably. Continental knitting, where the yarn is held in the left hand, is generally faster than English style because the yarn travels less. Lever or Irish cottage knitting, where one needle is anchored, is faster again and is what production knitters historically used. Changing style is a real investment of practice for a real gain.
How do I estimate stitch counts from a pattern?
For a rectangle, multiply the stitch count by the row count. For a shaped garment, add the pieces and treat shaping as roughly average — the decreases and increases broadly cancel. Many patterns give a total yardage, which combined with a typical stitches-per-metre figure gives another route to the same estimate.
Why does my project take longer than estimated?
Usually a combination of slower stitch patterns than the swatch suggested, more finishing than allowed for, and unpicking. Adding a further 20% to any estimate is not pessimism — it is the difference between an estimate and a plan.
