What this planner works out
This planner turns scarf or shawl dimensions and gauge into a cast-on count, a row count and a yarn estimate.
Accessories are forgiving about fit and unforgiving about proportion. A scarf 5 cm too narrow looks mean, and one too long is unwieldy.
Project dimensions
Before you cast on
- Typical scarf widths are 20 to 30 cm; lengths 150 to 200 cm, or longer for wrapping twice.
- A shawl or wrap is wider — commonly 40 to 70 cm — and the shape often triangular rather than rectangular, which this planner does not model.
- Gauge should come from a blocked swatch. Lace in particular changes dramatically on blocking.
- Scarves are knitted the long way by some patterns, which swaps the stitch and row counts entirely.
A scarf is a narrow, long rectangle, which means very few stitches per row and a great many rows. 50 stitches over 504 rows is 25,200 stitches — comparable to a small garment, delivered in a way that never seems to progress. Knitting one the long way, with 500 stitches over 50 rows, is the same total and feels entirely different.
How this calculator works
Dimensions divided by gauge, area times a rate:
Cast-on = width ÷ 10 × stitches per 10 cm
Rows = length ÷ 10 × rows per 10 cm
Yarn = width × length ÷ 100 × metres per 100 cm²The calculation assumes a rectangle. Triangular and crescent shawls use roughly half the area of the rectangle enclosing them, so halving the yarn estimate is a reasonable first approximation for those.
Worked example: a scarf
Using the default figures — 25 by 180 cm at 20 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm, 4 m per 100 cm²:
- Cast on: 50 stitches
- Rows: 504
- Yarn: about 180 m
180 metres is a single ball of many DK yarns, which makes a scarf one of the cheapest projects to start. The 504 rows are the real cost — at 25,200 stitches it is a substantial piece of knitting, and it is why scarves are so often abandoned. Knowing that before starting is the point of calculating it.
Common mistakes
- Making a scarf too narrow. Below about 18 cm it looks skimped.
- Not blocking the swatch for lace. Lace changes dimension dramatically.
- Using stocking stitch without a border. It curls into a tube.
- Applying a rectangle calculation to a triangular shawl. Halve the estimate.
- Underestimating the row count. It is what makes long narrow projects drag.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a scarf be?
Roughly the wearer's height is a common guideline for a scarf that can be wrapped once comfortably. 150 to 180 cm suits most adults; 200 cm or more allows wrapping twice. A child's scarf should be shorter for safety as well as proportion, and loop or infinity styles avoid trailing ends entirely.
Which stitches work for a scarf?
Anything reversible, since both sides show. Garter, seed, ribbing and many cable patterns work well. Stocking stitch curls badly and needs a border or a lining. Lace suits shawls, where blocking opens the pattern out, and is less practical for a scarf that will be worn scrunched.
Should I knit a scarf lengthways?
It is worth considering. Casting on for the length and working the width means very long rows and very few of them, which some knitters find far less tedious. It also suits stripes running along the scarf. The drawback is that a mistake affects a very long row, and casting on 500 stitches is its own task.
How much yarn for a shawl?
Considerably more than a scarf — a decent-sized triangular shawl commonly takes 400 to 800 m depending on size and gauge. Sock and lace weight yarns are usual, and a single 100 g skein of 4-ply at around 400 m is a common shawl quantity. Estimating from the rectangle and halving is a reasonable start.
