What this estimator works out
This estimator multiplies your body weight by the distance walked and a factor for pace, giving a rough estimate of the energy used.
Walking energy cost scales almost linearly with distance and body weight, which is why a simple multiplication works reasonably well. Pace, gradient and fitness all move the answer, and the estimate is deliberately coarse.

Before you rely on the figure
- Use distance in kilometres and weight in kilograms.
- Choose the pace that matches how you actually walked. Brisk means you can talk but not sing comfortably.
- The estimate assumes level ground. Hills increase the cost substantially — an uphill kilometre can cost half as much again.
- Carrying a heavy bag or pushing a pram increases the effective weight and therefore the energy used.
Walking a given distance costs roughly the same energy whether you take 30 minutes or 45, because you are moving the same mass the same distance against the same friction. Walking faster burns more per minute but for fewer minutes. Speed matters far more for running, where air resistance and bounce become significant.
How this calculator works
A single multiplication:
Calories = weight in kg × distance in km × pace factor
0.45 easy pace · 0.75 brisk paceThe factors are approximations of the widely used figure of roughly 0.5 kcal per kilogram per kilometre for ordinary walking, adjusted upward for a brisk pace where a small amount of extra work is done.
This is gross energy expenditure, which includes the energy you would have used sitting still during the same period. The additional energy attributable to the walk itself is somewhat lower.
Worked example: 5 km at 80 kg
Using the default figures — 80 kg walking 5 km:
- At an easy pace: 80 × 5 × 0.45 = 180 kcal
- At a brisk pace: 80 × 5 × 0.75 = 300 kcal
Five kilometres is around an hour of walking, and 180 to 300 calories is roughly a chocolate bar. That comparison is worth sitting with, because it explains why exercise alone is an inefficient route to a calorie deficit — and why the genuine benefits of walking, on cardiovascular health, blood pressure, mood and sleep, are the better reason to do it.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a faster walk burns proportionally more. Over a fixed distance the difference is modest.
- Using it for hilly routes. Gradient increases the cost substantially and is not modelled.
- Treating fitness tracker figures as more accurate. They estimate too, and often generously.
- Eating back the estimate. It is gross expenditure and carries wide error.
- Entering miles as kilometres. A mile is 1.61 km.
Frequently asked questions
How does this compare with a fitness tracker?
Trackers use heart rate, step count and personal data and are generally in the same range, but published comparisons have found energy expenditure estimates from consumer devices can be out by 20% or more in either direction. Neither this nor a tracker should be treated as a measurement.
How much walking should I do?
UK physical activity guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week for adults, which brisk walking satisfies, plus muscle-strengthening activity on two days. The 10,000 step figure is a marketing origin rather than a clinical one, though it is a reasonable rough target.
Does walking uphill make much difference?
Yes, considerably. Climbing requires work against gravity in proportion to your weight and the height gained, and a steady uphill kilometre can cost 50% more than the same distance on the flat. Downhill is cheaper than level walking on a gentle gradient and more expensive on a steep one, because braking takes effort too.
Is walking enough exercise on its own?
It covers the aerobic component of activity guidance well, and it is accessible, low-impact and sustainable — which matters more than intensity for most people. It does not cover the muscle-strengthening element, and guidance recommends including that on two days a week alongside.
