What this calculator works out
This calculator divides your time by your distance to give a pace in minutes per kilometre and per mile, along with the equivalent speed in kilometres per hour.
Pace and speed describe the same thing from opposite directions. Pace answers "how long does each kilometre take"; speed answers "how far do I get in an hour". Walkers and runners generally think in pace; route planners and fitness guidance usually quote speed.

Before you calculate
- Use total elapsed time including stops if you want your real average, or moving time only if you want your walking pace.
- Enter distance in kilometres. A mile is 1.609 km.
- Terrain matters more than most people expect. A hilly or rough route can add several minutes per kilometre.
- For route planning over hills, Naismith's rule adds roughly an hour for every 600 m of ascent on top of the flat-ground time.
Around 5 km/h, or 12 minutes per kilometre, is a typical adult walking pace on the flat. Brisk walking — fast enough to raise your breathing but still allow conversation — is usually 5.5 to 6.5 km/h. Anything below about 4 km/h is a stroll rather than exercise.
How this calculator works
One division, expressed three ways:
Pace (min/km) = time in minutes ÷ distance in km
Pace (min/mile) = pace per km × 1.609
Speed (km/h) = distance ÷ (time ÷ 60)Pace is shown in minutes and seconds rather than as a decimal, because that is how it is universally quoted — 12:00 rather than 12.0, and 5:30 rather than 5.5.
Worked example: 5 km in an hour
Using the default figures — 5 km in 60 minutes:
- Pace: 12:00 per km
- Pace: 19:19 per mile
- Speed: 5 km/h
That is a standard steady walking pace, and it is the figure most route planners assume. It is useful as a personal benchmark: if a 5 km walk routinely takes you 75 minutes rather than 60, planning a day's walking on the standard assumption will leave you an hour short.
Common mistakes
- Mixing kilometres and miles. Enter distance in kilometres; the mile pace is calculated for you.
- Including stops without meaning to. Decide whether you want elapsed or moving time.
- Applying flat-ground pace to hills. Ascent slows walking substantially.
- Assuming pace is constant over distance. Most people slow noticeably after the first hour.
- Entering time in hours. The field expects minutes.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as brisk walking?
The practical test is the talk test: brisk means you can hold a conversation but could not comfortably sing. In speed terms that is usually somewhere between 5.5 and 6.5 km/h for most adults, though fitness and leg length both move it. UK activity guidance counts brisk walking as moderate intensity activity.
How does hilly ground affect the time?
Substantially. Naismith's rule, still widely used for hill walking, allows roughly one hour for every 5 km on the flat plus an extra hour for every 600 m of ascent. Rough or boggy ground, poor visibility and a heavy pack all slow things further, and descent is not as fast as people assume.
Is walking pace a useful fitness measure?
Usual walking speed is a well-established measure in older adults and is associated with a range of health outcomes. For most people, a gradual improvement in the pace at which a familiar route can be covered comfortably is a reasonable and easily observed sign of improving fitness.
How long does 10,000 steps take?
At a typical stride, 10,000 steps is roughly 7 to 8 km, which at 5 km/h is around 90 minutes of walking spread across a day. The 10,000 figure originated in marketing rather than research, and health benefits appear well below it — several studies find substantial benefit at 6,000 to 8,000 steps.
